These pictures were originally taken to mirror an old family photo of my Dad that sits on the piano. In it he had beautiful curly hair and had a ball sitting in front of him. We took these pictures right before we took Sam to get his first haircut in hopes to recreate the look... Well the only things that were similar about the two photographs were the hair and the ball. I tried though... and here are the pictures!

Sometimes I am utterly amazed at the beauty that surrounds me. I am reminded that God is an incredible artist whose promises and creation hold true throughout the ages. It was in one of these moments last week that I stepped off the back steps of our house to witness this beautiful rainbow. It filled the sky and I was able to reflect on all my blessings; my husband and son, my family, friends, a home to live in and a God who loves not only me but all those in my life.

Every year for Easter we go to Piney Point for the sunrise service. It's absolutely gorgeous but a little on the chilly side as it's so early in the morning. So instead of donning our "Sunday Best" we put on two pairs of pants, sweatshirts and a couple of scarves. So we went back a week later in the afternoon to play on the beach and take some "Easter" pictures! Also John tried to teach Sam how to skip rocks. When Sam first saw John do it he ran up the beach and got his very own little rock and placed it in the water, it was so sweet!

Wow, I can't believe that it's already April and even more so Easter is this weekend! Well we got together with friends and let the boys dye Easter eggs this year and they also got to have an early Easter egg hunt! They did really well with the egg hunt and found all the goodies. I am not sure they knew there was stuff in the eggs (thanks Ryan and Sara) but once they found out they started throwing them on the ground to break them open. It was pretty funny! Then we finally got brave and took them inside to color some eggs. A few spills and some dyed fingers later our eggs were done and the Sam and Lukas were relatively the same color as they started out being. We had a lot of fun and now have some beautiful eggs!

We were really blessed to have such a pretty day to have our egg hunt!
This is Sam finding his first egg!
And the boys going through all the fun stuff!
He's found cars....
And here I'm showing Sam how to be gentle with the egg. He didn't break a single one!
And here we're putting the egg into the dye...
and Sam thought you should probably stir the eggs.
Ryan and Sara dyed their eggs with Lukas!
And look how pretty they turned out!
Sam was very happy with his egg dying experience! See our eggs at the top of the page!

This is a cake I did yesterday, sort of last minute. It's amazing how the month has just flown by! I knew I had to do this cake for about two weeks but it really just crept up on me so I decided to try something different to make it fit into my schedule. First off I used store bought frosting... I was nervous at first since I have never had much luck frosting a cake until Heather showed me how to do it properly, and most of that I contributed to the crumb coat and the type of frosting it was. But in this case I was doing a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting so I thought that even if I got a few crumbs it wouldn't be the end of the world. It actually worked rather well and i was able to get the cake quite smooth looking. The only problem occurred when I went to decorate it. Because the frosting does not harden it is much harder to pick up your design with a toothpick should it be less than desirable. I had to patch the cake a few times which was a nail biting experience. In the end the cake turned out great and everyone was happy.

Yesterday was Whitney's birthday and Mom and I took her up to the DC to go to the Spy Museum and lunch. We also happened upon a Bed bath and Beyond which was a pleasant distraction as well.
The Spy Museum was really neat, lunch was very swanky and overall we had a great trip because the weather held out and so did the bug that Whit was getting. Once home, Dad made a great steak dinner, Mom had a really scrumptious dessert and there were my cupcakes of course... which turned out to be prettier than they were tasty, in my opinion at least. Whitney is feeling better this morning... I can tell because she hasn't run to the bathroom more than ten times in 40 minutes. These are the pictures of our little trip to DC. Happy birthday Whitney!

It should be noted that we didn't actually eat here as we were stuffed from lunch but Whitney has such a love of Haagen-Dazs that she just had to have her picture taken :)

Yay for cupcakes! So, I really like the idea of a cupcake... it's your own little piece of cake. There's no end piece with too much frosting and you don't have to go through the hassle of actually cutting the cake. Also, I love that it has a wrapper; like it is a little present in and of itself. That said... have you ever had a batch of cupcakes where they all turned out perfectly? I haven't. Some have been great; perfect domes, standing straight, no crevasses on the top. But others, those lazy ones that decided it would be too much effort to rise above the paper or if they do rise they have poor posture, it's those that make cupcakes a hit or miss baking experience. Well enough about that. For my sister's birthday I decided to make her some cupcakes and use poured fondant. The actual making of the poured fondant was pretty easy and after I got the hang of how long to heat it before dipping it went rather quickly. Poured fondant is essentially sugar and light corn syrup. you heat it, let it cool, beat it, let it cool and then heat it again. If you want a really good tutorial click here. I think the project turned out well considering none of my tops were very smooth and the poured fondant is a rather thin layer of glaze... I dipped them a few times to get a more even coat and that seemed to help. I don't know a lot about the properties of sugar or anything, so maybe this is common knowledge but the biggest piece of advice I can give in this is when you are reheating your poured fondant, do not let it boil! You always want it to be opaque. If you boil it, it will not go back. (as far as I could tell at least) So I did the big cupcakes and I made flowers on the top of them, and then I did the mini cupcakes and wrote out the happy birthday message part. I also wrapped a ribbon around them to make them look prettier since I didn't use a decorative paper cup.
